One of the most inspirational projects I've had the pleasure of working on as a freelance photographer was the Wilberforce Women international grassroots photography project.
Meeting women from Sierra Leone, Iceland, Poland and the UK, and using photography to share our stories was inspirational, challenging and immensely rewarding. It gives me great pleasure to feature this video of Lee Karen Stow, founder of Women with Cameras International (formerly Wilberforce Women) receiving an honorary doctorate at Hull University on January 26th 2012.
To find out more about Lee's projects, and the extraordinary women Lee talks about in her speech, please visit www.leekarenstow.com
Now on at Health Central, Ferensway Hull.
(In between St Stephens Centre and the Holiday Inn)
‘Down a quiet alleyway a beautiful red door reveals the
date of 1869; over a bustling street Neptune looks out
across a sea of shoppers; on a rare mulberry tree outside
Wilberforce House berries hang in the September sun…’
A selection of images taken from the Outlook collection,
a photographic trail which takes you on a journey around
Kingston upon Hull’s historic Old Town.
Outlook, created through NHS Hull for World Mental Health
Day, encourages us to slow down, ‘Take Notice’ of our
surroundings and appreciate the world around us.
‘Taking Notice’ is one of the five simple steps that have
been identified as helping us to improve mental wellbeing.
As of November 2011 we are touring across a variety of venues. As part of the Outlook project and along side being exhibited, FREE history and photography tours of the city are on offfer. Great for those interested in photography or history or both. Informal, fun and relaxed these tours offer a friendly and accessible way to get to know the city better. Please contact me if you would like to go on our mailout.
Outllook is s part of the NHS programme to raise awareness on mental health and wellbeing. For further information on the NHS Wellbeing programme contact

www.theseafieldproject.co.uk is now complete, the personal arts project I started in autumn 2010 took me in a very different direction to my usual freelance work. The routine of weekly documenting and collecting objects was at times not easy for someone who likes spontaneity and is very used to unpredicatble freelance work. The unusual and freezing conditions of last winter made for an interesting experience. Please visit the seafield website to find out more.
